Week 6 flash: direct, reflected, diffused

In week 6 we used the speed lite to do different tasks in this one we had to use it to take a portrait or still life with an under exposed background I used an aperture of 14 and a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second and took a photograph of William here you can see that the background is underexposed while there is light on the subject. I used an ISO of 100 because I was outside in bright light.

In both these images I didn't use the metering mode but instead did it manually changing the aperture to control the output of light so that my subject was correctly exposed.

This is the same task but here I took a photo without the speed lite to compare the difference in the images.
f/16.0
shutter speed: 1/25
ISO: 100

This is the same image of the tree where I used the speed lite in this image you can see the difference the light has on the subject making the background a lot more underexposed than the previous picture.
f/16.0
shutter speed: 1/100
ISO: 100

The next exercise we had to use a canon speedlite to fill in shadows during the day we used ambient lighting for this task we also had to use different F stops that were F3.5, F5.6, F11, F22.

This is an image I took of Sepa we had to use the lowest F stop mine was 4.5 I'm not sure if this worked as I can still see shadow on the subjects face.
shutter speed: 1/500
ISO: 100

This is another picture I took of Sepa here I used an aperture of 5.0 which was the wrong settings I should have used an F stop of 5.6. I can see now that shadows on the subjects face don't appear as much as they did in the previous image.

Here I used an aperture of 11 the shadows appear but not as much as they did in the previous images I think this gives an alright result because it looks nicely exposed.

I like this one the best I think it gives the best result where the subject is correctly exposed you can still see the shadows in the subjects face but not as much as the first images. Here I used an aperture of 22 a shutter speed of 1/20 I should have used a tripod as I handheld it. An ISO of 100 was used.

The next task was to use the speedlite and bounce the flash off a low roof and walls we also had to use a shutter speed of 1/125.

Here I used the speedlite to bounce the flash off the top of a roof I don't think this worked well mainly because where we took the pictures didn't have a low roof and was quite open and exposed to a lot of other things.
f/4.0
shutter speed: 1/125
ISO:100

This picture of Sepa I used the speedlite to bounce the light off the wall next to me so I pointed the flash to the wall allowing the flash to bounce off the wall and onto my subject.
f/4.0
shutter speed: 1/125

In this last photograph I took of Sepa I had to point the speedlite behind me a capture my subject this didnt have much of an effect because the light was pointed in the opposite direction of my subject with no light falling onto her.

Using the Gary Fong Half Moon diffuser to diffuse the flash I had to take an image of my subject without it and one with the diffuser on.

This is a picture I took of William without the half moon diffuser here you can see that he is under exposed with no light falling on the subject.

The next image I took of William I used he Gary Fong diffuser here you can see that he looks more properly exposed then he did in the previous image the diffuser also isn't as harsh as it is without the diffuser.

This image I took of William I didn't use the diffuser but instead had the speedlite pointed straight at mu subject giving him an over exposed look as you can see the speedlite is quite harsh when pointed directly at the subject.

In the last task we went into the studio and did flash and blur for this exercise we had to be in a darkened area with no ambient light coming through.

In this image Richelle was twirling I was able to catch some motion blur and also captured here at the end where she looks sharp

In this image I captured a photo of Natalie where she was spinning for flash and blur when the flash goes off and the picture is taken the subject should be sharp at the end and blurred in between the beginning while being sharp at the end I haven't really explored with flash and blur but I understand what is expected when taking this type of shot.
