Week 4 line and pattern research

Line photography is very interesting it serves to create mood and also leads the viewers eye through the photograph. When dealing with lines the subject can be broken into the following types

  • horizontal
  • vertical
  • diagonal
  • converging
Line can be great elements of composition because they give structure to your photographs. Line can also give good composition by directing the viewers eyes to the main subject of the image or lead the viewers eyes from one part of the picture to another

I had fun shooting pictures of lines, I liked environmental portrait we had to tae where the subjects gaze led the viewers eye to a secondary subject in the image I think it was very interesting being able to have my subject plus a secondary subject captured in one photograph. I also enjoyed taking pictures of lines because I could edit them in camera raw if it didn't look straight enough.

I like this photo of lines where the shadows are shown on the subject its interesting how the light allows for the shadows to fall naturally on the subject.

This is another example of line photography.

Pattern photography utilises elements that are repeated some photographers use the pattern as the main subject of a image while others use it for the overall composition and look of the image. You can choose whether or no to emphasise or break the pattern to capture a great shot.

Appreciating pattern will help you develop your photographic eye and increase your appreciation for the correlation between shapes, colours and line in all things photography.

I enjoy pattern photography I think its interesting when you find patterns and photograph them and it looks really great I like breaking the pattern photographs I think it gives the image a edgy look and also leads the viewers eye to the break in the pattern.

This is an example of pattern photography a narrow depth of field was used with the subject in the foreground in focus and the mid and background out of focus.

This is also another example of pattern but here the pattern has been broken by a red tomato it also has complimentary colours of red and green.

Boyd Webb is a N.Z born visual artist who now works in the United Kingdom.

the lines in this image makes the photograph unique looking the lines seperate the bottom , middle and top with leading lines of the telephone making the viewers eye attracted more to whats going on at the top.

I also like this image as the lines half the photo but you get a sense of whats going on at the top and the bottom go the image with the subject at the bottom leading you to the subject at the top. he lines he composes in his shots are interesting also there are lines in the instrument and patterns of the bottles in the water.

Max Dupain was an Australian modernist photographer and went out on his own to open a studio in Sydney, while on the south coast of Sydney he photographed the head and shoulders of a friend it would go on to be one of his most famous pieces.

I think this is a great image that shows just how well pattern can be incorporated in a photograph through shadow the lighting is great because its positioned the shadow to cover majority of her skin the way her hair is situated also gives a great look for curly wavy looking pattern effect.
