Week 4 portfolio shoot

In week 4 I decided that I wanted to do environmental portraiture. I felt comfortable taking images of people in there natural environment. With this photoshoot I didnt know what was going to happen all I knew was I had a model and we were going to take some photos when I was taking them I was lost for what kind of poses I needed my subject to do but because she is familiar with the boxing enviroment it made it alot easier. I had fun taking these images I like the lighting and the contrasting colours of the red and blue.

I like the colours of the red, white and blue in this image. I can see pattern from the ropes of the boxing ring, there is also pattern from the roof lights. I used a straight on view to capture my subject. This image makes me feel that my models about to hit somebody in the ring.
f/8.0
shutter speed: 1/125
ISO: 100

I like the way I've under exposed the background while exposing my subject correctly. I like the black and how it matches the background here I have gone quite close to my subject I thought I may have made my model feel slightly uncomfortable but even as I got closer she was more confident when taking this image. This image makes me feel like she's thinking about where she will hit her opponent next.
f/16.0
shutter speed: 1/125
ISO: 100

In this image again I see pattern, contrasting colours of the red and blue I also like the white marking on the boxing ring floor it all works well together with the colours my subject has on. In this image I lowered myself so that I was same height as my subject. This image makes me feel like my subject is about to win against her opponent.
f/5.6
shutter speed: 1/125
ISO: 100

Here I like how my subjects face is lit I used the lighting kit for this photoshoot. I like the dark background and the colours in this image. Here I asked my subject to make it look like she was in the ring with an opponent this image makes me feel like she's got her guard up and no one can mess with her.

Kieran Scott- Food photography

These are images that Kieran Scott did for his food photography series in this task I tried to take pictures of my own food photography here were my results.

I took this image of diced chicken because it had a honey soy chicken sauce the sauce went bubbly and gave the image good texture. I took it from a high angle I also shot this at night with the stove light on and a high ISO.
f/4.5
Shutter speed: 1/100
ISO: 3200

This is another image of the previous image that I took only this one was taken at a lower angle. I like the texture of the honey soy sauce in this picture.
f/4.5
shutter speed: 1/160
ISO: 3200

Here I have taken an image of the preparation for making sushi I composed the image so that everything was in frame I took it from a high angle. I like the colours of the vegetables in this image.
f/4.5
shutter speed: 1/125
ISO: 1600

Digital tech 2: Kieran Scott research

In this image I can see people also a quad motorbike and some lion red. Here you can see that a wide depth of field was used the image looks like it was taken from a low vantage point or maybe it was taken from a straight on point. There is alot of texture in this image from the dirt used to make the hangi also the texture in the tyres of the quad. There is pattern formed from the rain falling a fast shutter speed would have been used to freeze the movement of rain.

This image makes me feel happy although the weather seems to think otherwise with the day looking cloudy and its also raining as you can see the rainfall in the image. The reason it makes me happy is because although it is raining they are still prepping a traditional Maori meal that wouldn't usually be done in the rain.

In this image I see an elderly Maori woman positioned in the centre of the frame I also see traditional Maori carvings. Repetition is shown in this image with the square frames, I can also see texture in the carvings of the door the photographer has also used ambient lighting with the natural light forming a triangle shape on the white wall. This image makes me feel like the woman is waiting to call visitors onto the marae or like she's thinking about the generations before her.

This is another image I chose of Kieran Scotts in this picture I can see fish hanging on wire I can also see an old elderly woman and a child. There is repetition in this image from the wire I can also see lines, there are complimentary colours of the green and red. A wide depth of field has been used, also the old lady falls on the intersecting lines of the rule of thirds. This image makes me feel good knowing that the traditional maori ways are still practiced today makes me feel happy about my heritage and knowing we still value our traditions.

Week 1- Portfolio statement and aims

This term I have been thinking about what genre of photography I will be doing I first chose portrait photography I was inspired by Larry Sultans series "pictures from home" and I wanted to emulate those images. Here are some images I took of my cousins children while visiting them. Larry Sultans "pictures from home" were something I was really interested in I like taking pictures of being in there natural environments mainly because they are more comfortable then if I was to place them elsewhere.

Here I tried to emulate an image of Larry Sultans one he took similar to this one. I like how the light shines through with the curtain opened a little and how my subject is still under exposed similar to the background. I see pattern in the fence, colours from the playground, green grass. Here I stood behind my subject and took it from a straight on vantage point. This image makes me feel like he wants to go and play on the playground but because it was a wet and rainy day he wasnt allowed to.

In this image

This image is just to reflect on the everyday life of this little boy being in his own surroundings is where he is most happiest. I took a close up image of him the reason for the grain in the picture was because my ISO was at its highest and I also used the flash. This image makes me feel really happy I love this little boy and the connection between him and I is evident in this image his eyes are really round I think they look cute.

Here I have taken a photo of my nephew again being inspired by larry sultans "pictures from home" series I captured this image of my nephew who had lost his first tooth he was so excited not sure if he was excited about losing his tooth or that he got $5 from it. I stood in front of him and took this image. This picture makes me feel happy because I know he's happy by the look on his face he's ready to go to the shop and buy most probably lollies.

In week one I knew I wanted to do portraits because I enjoy taking images of people adults and children. In the coming weeks I have since changed my mind from wanting to emulate Larry Sultans series "pictures from home". So I thought about taking images of places where past events have happened I wanted to base my project on areas in Otara I took some images but my model had no significance to places where I had photographed her.

For my portfolio I wanted it to be on Otara I thought because I love the place I live as well as photography why not put the two together, my aim was to photograph different stories on Otara. These are the images I took. Im not sure what genre of photography these fit into maybe documentary photography capturing images of my subject that were significant to myself when I was growing up. Here I am trying to portray my neighbourhood as a place that many have grown up in these are significant places to alot of youth that are from Otara. Being from Otara and growing up here all my life I wanted this place to be included in my images. When the viewer looks at these I want them to be able to know that Otara is very dear to my heart the streets that raised me and the reason why I am where I am today I guess.

In this image I went to what is known as "the tunnels" to youth in Otara these are situated near a high school so they were always somewhere where they went to hang out before and after school. I thought I would take a low angle of my subject sitting on top of the tunnel I like where Im standing because I can see straight through the tunnel with my focus still on my subject.
f/4.0
shutter speed: 1/200
ISO: 100

Here is another image I took of my subject standing infront of the tunnel I like the lighting here you can see that the ambient light lights up my subject correctly.
f/4.0
shutter speed: 1/1000
ISO: 100

In this image I stood on top of the tunnel looking down at my subject I don't think there was any reason to why I took this picture then the vantage point I liked that I was high up with my subject looking up at me.
f/8.0
shutter speed: 1/60
ISO: 100

This is an image I took of a park this was where part of the movie "Once were warriors" was shot. I like the shadows in this image and also the patterns.
f/8.0
shutter speed: 1/160
ISO: 100

This is an image where I had my subject walk past a mural the person in the mural is a relation of my who sadly lost his life in a car accident.
f/14.0
shutter speed: 1/160
ISO: 100

This image wasn't to successful the only reason I took this was because of the pipes in the background there used to be about 6 of them they're only 2 now this is like an icon landmark in Otara many know that these pipes have been there since our parents were little and when you see those you know that you're close to Otara kind of thing.
f/14.0
shutter speed: 1/250
ISO: 100

This is an image I took where the movie "The Tattooist" was shot I took it from a front on point of view I took this image late in the afternoon when the sun had gone down.
f/6.3
shutter speed: 1/80
