Research Models. Jonathan Bielaski

Johnathan Bielaski is a Toronto based environmental portrait specialist photographer which captures the subject in their natural environment. The reason I chose Bielaski as a research model was because of the lighting he uses in his images external lighting is something Ive worked closely with this semester for my portfolio project. The lighting is the main similarity to that of Bielaskis work as well as shooting his subjects in their natural environment. His work is alot more professional then mine and I guess I only hope to be able to shoot images as good as his in the future.

I like the use of lighting that Johnathan has used in this image you can see there is light coming from the top left hand corner it doesn't look like there is light on the right side with it being darkened and also there are alot of dark areas on the right. I can see pattern in this image from the ground, behind the subject on the wall. This image makes me feel like he is on his break having a cigar maybe waiting for clients.

Like most of the research models I like the lighting in this image, I don't know if ambient lighting was used I feel as though there is external lighting in this image. From the top right hand corner you can see the light, also on the rocks behind him maybe another light was positioned in the bottom right hand corner. It looks as though there is light coming from every corner of this image. Here he has placed his subject in the centre of the frame straight on vantage point. This image makes me feel like he is advertising for a backpack company, like he's ready to go hiking. I guess the idea here is capturing a person in there natural environment.

  1. What genre is Jonathan Bielaski working in? Besides his website where are you likely to see these images? How does his work relate to yours? How is it different?
